Measles Weasels

Posted by Andy Hockley on 14 December, 2005

It’s a bad time to be about to have a baby in Romania. That’s because there is currently a measles epidemic here. The reason there is an epidemic, despite the vaccination being compulsory, is because they ran out of vaccine a couple of years ago and nobody really did anything about it. I’m sure (at least I bloody hope) that they are solving this supply problem now, but it’s a bit late as 10 kids have already died – and the point of a vaccination program is to stop any outbreak in its tracks (if more or less everyone is immune the occasional isolated cases will remain just that – isolated cases). Now I have been in small villages in Africa and have seen little tables set up under umbrellas for vaccinating all the kids of the village. If rural Uganda can manage it you’d think Romania would able to. Cretins. I think it’s simple shit like this that winds me up more than mad psycho neo-cons bombing people into accepting “our values”.

Or maybe it’s because I’m on the verge of becoming a father.

May you find this Christmas inner peace
Equal to the patient love you give,
Releasing all the pain you can release,
Renewing all the grace with which you live.
Yearnings may you turn to rhapsodies,
Choosing to find happiness in beauty,
    Holding in their haunting melodies
Riches that sustain your sense of duty.
In anger may you find an evening star
Showing you the way to Bethlehem.
The angels that watch naked from afar
May you hear sing of who would none condemn.
As all you love are blessed in having you
So may you feel the joy in all you do.

    May Peace
    Hope and Love
    be with you
    Today
    Tomorrow
    and Always

    Merry Christmas!

3 children and 1 adult died in Italy during a 2002 measels outbreak from lack of vaccinations.

2 children and 1 teenager died in the Netherlands during a 1999 measels outbreak from lack of vaccinations.

There was a measles outbreak in Utah in 1996, but no deaths. Pennsylvania, 2003. Indiana, 2004.

I hope they get on the ball here in Romania, just like you. But there are other ‘civilized’ places with this sort of mucky muck.

Hang on a second – I never implied that Romania was unique in having a measles outbreak. Just I thought it was pretty pathetic that there were some people so incompetent that they ran out of vaccine and didn’t get more in. I have no reason to doubt the figures you quote, so I would (and do) equally condemn those responsible for those outbreaks too.

(I like living in Romanian by the way. I think it’s a beautiful country filled with a lot of wonderful people)

Oops, I was just adding the context! 10 deaths here in Romania *is* much worse.

However, I negelected to state that in a 1997 outbreak, there were 13 Romanian deaths. “Seven persons who died were unvaccinated, and six were reported to have received one dose of measles vaccine.”

I guess one has to be careful of the vaccines one asks for. 😮
